Beyonce's Band of Gold
A fellow Twitter-er (@suzywelch) mentioned this essay that examines Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” through the prism of that old song "Band of Gold." As you can imagine, the writer points out that the Beyonce song expresses some rather crude, archaic sentiments, but there is also an interesting analysis of how the music drives the story of the song. I've heard the comment about the "anti-feminist" sentiment expressed in Beyonce's song. Frankly, I don't think women NEED to be married to feel validated or worthy; however, most WANT to get married. And that's what I hear in the song, basically "you can't have it both ways." You can't not commit to me in any meaningful way and still think that I'm going to sit home and wait for you. If YOU don't want to put a ring on it, there's someone out there who will. It's not about settling for the sake of the ring, but about knowing what you want and going for it.
